It's suing the South Korean giant over its VR Gear headset. The plaintiff alleges that Samsung has benefited from its VR technology, which had been unlawfully misappropriated by two gentlemen, in breach of their non-disclosure agreements with Zeni - Mr Palmer Luckey, owner of Oculus VR, LLC, and John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software (one of Zeni's subsidiaries). The suit filing further says that Carmack had allowed Mat Hooper into the id offices without permission after Hooper was sacked from his position as creative director. It is also planning to score a chunk of profits from the sale of infringed technology and use of trade secrets, coupled with injunctive relief and punitive damages to fully compensate for their losses.

ZeniMax, a company that Mark Zuckerberg had never heard of before 2014, is clearly on some sort of victory high after successfully suing Oculus for $500 million. Carmack is said to be closely involved with this VR headset project, where he also developed heavy software optimizations for seamless mobile usage. "Despite this awareness, Samsung nonetheless obtained and used ZeniMax VR technology from Oculus, without ZeniMax's consent".

The full text of the filing can be found on Polygon. ZeniMax accuses Samsung of copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and unjust enrichment in this new lawsuit. Carmack was a co-founder of id Software, a game development studio that revolutionized the first-person shooter.

The code and confidential documents stolen by Carmack from ZeniMax permitted Oculus to secretly develop a mobile software developer kit ("Mobile SDK") and related software for the Samsung Gear VR.

In addition, the jury upheld our complaint regarding the theft by John Carmack of RAGE source code and thousands of electronic files on a USB storage device which contained ZeniMax VR technology.

According to the lawsuit, which you can read in its entirety on Scribd, Carmack snuck Hooper into id's offices during after-hours to work on a mobile VR project that ended up becoming Samsung's Gear VR.
