A Broadwater County Sheriff's deputy with only three years on the job and a wife and three children at home was shot and killed early Tuesday while trying to make a traffic stop.

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin says Moore was pursuing a vehicle on U.S. Highway 287 when dispatchers lost contact with him at about 3 a.m. Mountain Time Tuesday.

Gootkin said the Gallatin deputy sent to the scene reviewed the dash camera video in the slain officer's auto and identified the SUV, which has California license plates. Officers deployed spike strips, but the vehicle continued another 30 miles (48 kilometers) on Interstate 90.

About 35 miles east of Missoula, the suspect began firing at law enforcement.

The passenger in the SUV, identified as 39-year-old Marshall Barrus, got out and began shooting at officers and was shot by officers before being taken to a hospital.

However, three Butte police cars were damaged by gunshots and taken to Missoula for investigation purposes.

The driver, Lloyd Barrus, 61, and the passenger are father and son, said Missoula County sheriff's spokeswoman Brenda Bassett. The chase ended before sunrise with the suspects' vehicle driving on its rims, a suspect shot and hospitalized and his father under arrest, officials said.

The 140-mile (225-kilometer) pursuit of the suspects crossed through parts of five counties and involved at least seven agencies, officials said.
