He remains one of the longest-running mayors in France, but has never held a top government post.

The 69-year-old represents the moderate, centrist wing of the party and was elected to the French National Assembly aged 34 in 1981, when Macron was a toddler. Christophe Castaner, Macron's campaign spokesman, was appointed government spokesman.

She takes over from Jean-Yves Le Drian, outgoing Socialist Defence Minister and a close friend of ex-President Francois Hollande, who was named Minister of "Europe and foreign affairs" in a new title underlining the importance of Europe for Macron.

In his first speech in the ministry's courtyard Wednesday, Collomb said Europe and France especially "are being targeted by terrorists", noting that the terrorist threat comes from overseas, but is also "rooted in our territory".

Le Drian's weakness could be his links to the unpopular Hollande. By contrast, almost 70 percent of National Front candidates have held some kind of elected office and, Bay said, and have the proven capacity to exercise a parliamentary mandate.

Macron is the conservative Merkel's fourth French president in almost 12 years as chancellor.

Before Macron's rise, Francois Bayrou was France's most well-known centrist politician and a three-time failed presidential candidate.

François Baroin, who is leading the campaign for the Republicans has made it clear that his party don't intend to go into coalition with Macron's REM, but take complete control. He had also hailing then US President Barack Obama as "handsome, young and also suntanned", the report said.

"I will always be a frank, direct and constructive partner, because I think the success of our two countries is deeply linked, and that the whole success of Europe depends on that", Macron said. He backed Macron earlier this year.

Philippe is "a prime minister who will bring everyone together around a progressive, daring, unifying programme", said Gerard Collomb, the Socialist mayor of Lyon and one of the earliest backers of Macron.

"This is a French government like no other", said Ifop analyst Frederic Dabi.

On Monday, his first day in office, he named center-right MP Edouard Philippe as prime minister and traveled to Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on reforming the European Union.

Le Drian says he expects France to play a crucial role in a "complex, fragile, unstable global situation".

Sylvie Goulard, a 52-year-old centrist MEP from the southern city of Marseille, is little known to the French public, having spent much of her career in Brussels.

Pro-European Goulard has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 and also worked as a political advisor to the European Commission president from 2001 to 2004.

The government includes 18 ministers, half of them women and half men.

Macron has said half his ministers will be women and that some will be high achievers in business, academia, the civil service or the NGO world.
