The Casilda native has been linked with the job for months, and speculation only heightened when Edgardo Bauza was relieved of his duties in April after less than a year in charge.

Sampaoli was presented in his new role in a press conference held on Thursday at the AFA training facilities in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires.

He has reportedly signed with the Argentine Soccer Association (AFA) until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after almost two years of turmoil at the Argentine FA.

Sampaoli is Argentina's third coach of their World Cup qualifying campaign, with their place in next summer's tournament in Russian Federation still in doubt.

Only the top four sides will qualify directly for the tournament that is to be staged in Russian Federation, and he stressed the need for the national team to get there.

Sampaoli had previously stated his desire to coach five-time Ballon d'Or victor Lionel Messi, and aims to have the Barcelona star at his best for his country.

"We want the most genuine and pleasant version of the best player in the world, we want him happy here", Sampaoli said, adding that he'd spoken with Messi in recent days. "I spoke to him yesterday [Wednesday] and he is very enthusiastic". "I want to welcome Jorge Sampaoli".

"Playing a World Cup is complicated", said Sampaoli, whose Chile team reached the second round before losing to hosts Brazil at the 2014 finals.

Sampaoli will travel to Melbourne on Friday morning to begin coaching the squad ahead of two worldwide friendlies.
