WWDC 2017: Here's everything Apple is expected to announce on Monday

Apple has begun manufacturing its long-awaited Siri-powered smart speaker to rival the likes of Amazon Echo and Google Home in the AI virtual assistant speaker department. That is all well and good, but having a diversified portfolio of products could help Apple get by on a rainy day, should that day ever come, and one sector the company is reportedly expanding into is the smart home speaker market.

Rumours about the Siri speaker, which doesn't have an official name, say the device will have a mesh outer shell and prototypes have allegedly included facial recognition, that works with integrated cameras. A Bloomberg report reveals that Apple has started the production of the smart speaker, and it might start shipping by the end of the year. The report says Apple "could debut the speaker as soon as" WWDC with a launch later this year.

Aside from the launch of upcoming Apple products, developers and gadget watchers are excited to Apple CEO Tim Cook's keynote address, which is scheduled on Monday, June 5, at 10 am PDT.

Apple had hoped Apple TV would prove a successful smart home hub but it has continued to underperform. Why wait for a Siri speaker when Amazon's hardware will support your calendars right now? Like the other smart speakers, Apple wants its speaker to allow consumers to control smart appliances.

It was reported earlier this month that Apple employees were testing the Siri speaker in their homes for several months. But without compatibility, users are more likely to choose Echo or Home and use other streaming services than Apple Music. The company expects service revenue to double by 2020 from last year's US$24bn.

The Siri Speaker is being produced by Inventec, the Taipei-based manufacturer already responsible for making the wireless AirPods.

They noted that the device will offer "virtual surround sound technology and deep integration with Apple's product lineup". Amazon's Alexa sports a touchscreen display for video calls and live security camera viewing, while Google's Home does not have. That's something Sonos has attempted with its Trueplay system, though that relies on analyzing the room with a wirelessly-connected iPhone rather than microphones and such built into its streaming speakers.
