Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, spoke in December with Russia's Ambassador to the USA about establishing a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and Moscow to discuss strategy in Syria and other policy issues, according to three people with knowledge of the discussion.

U.S. President Donald Trump leaped to the defense of senior adviser Jared Kushner over the weekend, saying his son-in-law was doing excellent work for the country.

Conway went on to say that President Trump has "expressed full confidence in Jared Kushner", noting the "considerable progress" he's made in the role and "very large, important portfolio that Jared oversees here at the White House". "In addition to that, and perhaps more importantly, he is a very good person", Trump told the New York Times.

The Washington Post reported Friday that Kushner and Russian Ambassador Surgey Kislyak met at Trump Tower in December to discuss the possibility of setting up secret, back-channel communications between Trump's transition team and officials in Moscow.

He added that his assessment wasn't changed just because the backchannels were allegedly set up during the administration's transition phase, given that prior to the inauguration, the Trump administration lacked the power to do anything to inhibit the Obama administration.

Democrats in Congress are calling for Kushner's security clearance to be reviewed, or even revoked, until this is all cleared up.

Sampaoli will travel to Melbourne on Friday morning to begin coaching the squad ahead of two worldwide friendlies . Sampaoli, 57, has taken over as coach of his home country after leaving Spanish club Sevilla after one season.

People familiar with the interactions told The New York Times the relationship began to fray after Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, which Kushner had strongly advocated, and because of his repeated attempts to oust Stephen Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, as well as the president's press secretary Sean Spicer.

"We have back-channel communications with any number of individual [countries]".

The news website Politico called Kushner the White House's " lead distraction" following what is being seen as Trump's mostly successful first foreign trip, which featured a stopover in Israel.

Members of Trump's White House have regularly requested anonymity when speaking to the press.

Until this week, Kushner had largely escaped the focus on Trump's links with Vladimir Putin's Moscow regime, which has so far forced the resignation of Trump's national security adviser and the recusal of his attorney-general from the FBI investigation into Russian influence.

"Secretary Kelly and Gen. McMaster have both discussed that, in general terms. back channels are an appropriate part of diplomacy", Spicer said.
