A murder suspect accused of killing two men during an anti-Muslim rant against two girls on board a train in OR said after the attack "that's what liberalism gets you", according to court documents cited by multiple U.S. news outlets.

Dozens of anti-fascist protesters could he heard yelling from outside the courtroom as Christian finished his statement.

Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, 23, and Ricky John Best, 53, were fatally stabbed while defending two young women who were being verbally assaulted by a man aboard a Portland train. "We need American here", "I don't care if you are ISIS", and "Free speech or die".

"He basically turned to my son and said terrible things, and my son just grabbed his father's hand and squeezed it so tight, that my husband hoped he wouldn't break it", said Margie Fletcher, Micah Fletcher's mother.

"Apparently the knife, when the gentleman stabbed me, the hilt, it hit my jawbone and broke it".

"I want you to imagine that for a second, being a little girl on that MAX".

Christian's next court appearance is on June 7. "He threatened me and tons of people", Joey Gibson said. Three other men on the train intervened before police say Christian attacked them, killing two and wounding one.

Fletcher, recently released from the hospital, appeared in the courtroom during the brief hearing along with family of victims and supporters.

Videos of Christian spewing hate speech towards Christians and Muslims have surfaced online in addition to his social media page that showed his allegiance to white nationalism and President Donald Trump.

Fletcher, whose "wound was within millimeters of being fatal", according to TIME, says he is grateful for the outpouring of support and the money that's been donated to aid in his recovery and go to Best and Namkai-Meche's families.

Last Friday, Christian allegedly stabbed two men to death and injured another man badly aboard a Portland metro train.

The FBI is investigating the attack to determine whether to charge Christian with terrorism or a federal hate crime, said Portland FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele.

The Pacific Northwest has been a leader on many socially liberal fronts including raising the minimum wage and legalizing recreational marijuana but the region has a long and violent history of white supremacist and other racist activities.

"They are the real victims here as well", he said.

"The idea that Portland is so liberal supersedes this dark, hidden secret about racism", said Karen Gibson, a professor of urban studies at Portland State University. They recognized the truth: we are more alike than we are different. According to an affidavit of probable cause, while in the police vehicle, Christian allegedly said that he was a "patriot" and admitted to the crime and saying, "that's what liberalism gets you". "Let's do them honor by standing with them and carrying on their legacy of standing up to hate and bigotry and violence".
