Donald Trump Delays Moving US Embassy To Jerusalem

Earlier Thursday, Trump signed a waiver under the Jerusalem Embassy Act and delayed moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Jordan, which oversees the holy Islamic and Christian sites in east Jerusalem that is envisaged as the future capital of the Palestinian state, has been repeatedly warning against the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Palestinians argue that moving the embassy from Tel Aviv would prejudge one of the most sensitive issues in the conflict - that status of Jerusalem - undermining United States status as an effective mediator. And Trump's statement said it's not a matter of if he'll move the embassy but when. "Though Israel is disappointed that the embassy will not move at this time, we appreciate today's expression of President Trump's friendship to Israel and his commitment to moving the embassy in the future", Netanyahu's office said. But the rules say presidents can postpone the enforcement for six months at a time - which they all have.

Jerusalem is an obstacle in the peace process, as it has the Western Wall, one of Israel's holiest sites. "Delaying the USA embassy move will in fact have the opposite effect and damage the prospect of a lasting peace by nurturing false expectations among the Palestinians regarding the division of Jerusalem, which will never happen". A wise call that will enhance chances for resuming effective peace talks. He's waived it for the next six months.

The two-state solution advocated by successive U.S. administrations and most European Union member states envisages East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.

"Given the choice between moving the embassy to Jerusalem or getting a waiver on visas", Gilboa said, "the second is preferable to most Israelis".

The Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority (PA) has welcomed a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to keep the U.S. embassy in Israel in the city of Tel Aviv instead of relocating it to Jerusalem.

They are also demanding that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian lands occupied in a 1967 war.

The embassy to Israel stays in Tel Aviv which has big, symbolic significance.

Trump had been lobbied heavily by Mideast leaders, notably Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II of Jordan, to sign the waiver to prevent further instability and unrest in the region. Building a new complex in Jerusalem could take even longer.
