When asked to respond to President Trump's tweets, Khan said Tuesday he had "no time" to do so as he dealt with the attacks that killed seven people and injured 48 others.

His tweet took Khan's comment that Londoners had "no reason to be alarmed" about the increased police presence out of context. "And we, as a society, especially as Americans, better do something about it".

Asked on Tuesday about the London visit, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said only that Trump meant to go and that "he appreciates her majesty's gracious invitation".

Pressed by reporters, May said on Monday that Khan "is doing a good job and it's wrong to say anything else". "Maybe he should do something to fix the problem rather than just sit there and pretend there isn't one".

But now May has spoken out to say, in guarded terms, that Trump was "wrong".

"In the circumstances where Donald Trump as president had a Muslim ban, had changed the policies of the U.S., the longstanding policies around refugees, in the circumstances where many British people disagree with many of Donald Trump's policies, we shouldn't be having a state visit", he said.

London attack: More detentions in hunt for accomplices

Mr Johnson told BBC Breakfast: "All that argument detracts from the responsibility of those scumbags and what they have done". Thousands attended a vigil on Monday evening to honour the victims outside London's City Hall, close to London Bridge.

Comfortable wins for Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal at French Open
Nick Kyrgios of Australia beat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in straight sets to reach the second round of the French Open . Verdasco went off to a 6-4 lead in set 1, with Zverev leveling at 6-3 in set 2 before darkness and rain suspended play.

She told The Sun: "The relationship with America is our deepest and most important defence and security relationship".

On Tuesday, May told a political rally in response to a question about Trump's tweets, "I think Donald Trump was wrong in the things that he has said about Sadiq Khan".

"Severe means an attack across the country is still highly likely, and so we have all got to be vigilant", Khan said.

"We keep appeasing it", Donald Trump Jr. said Monday in Trump Tower.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Theresa May had been "extremely helpful and accommodating" at keeping policing numbers high when he was in City Hall but it was matter for the London Mayor to decide.

No date has been set for the visit, which was agreed during May's visit to Washington in January and seen as a sign of her desire to maintain good ties with Britain's traditional close ally as Trump began his presidency. "State visits are given to world leaders who have had distinguished service, who have a track record", he said.
