Full England squad train ahead of Scotland qualifier

Scotland and England meet in a crunch World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park on Saturday.

With Wayne Rooney having again been overlooked, England do not now have a permanent captain and Southgate said Kane, 23, would wear the armband at Hampden Park.

The Tottenham attacker won last season's Premier League Golden Boot after eight goals in the last three matches saw him leapfrog rivals Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

England are top of UEFA qualifying Group F, four points clear of second-place Slovakia and six points above fourth-place Scotland.

He told a press conference: "Harry Kane will captain the side tomorrow".

"I don't think this is a free hit, I really don't think it's like that", said Strachan. "That's hopefully something I can achieve one day".

Asked how Kane had reacted to the news, Southgate replied: "He was pretty chuffed (pleased)". It's a great honour for a player and their family.

If Scotland are to lose - and the manner of defeat may be more significant than whether it happens - further pressure will surround Strachan's position. "But there are top players and there's good competition". "We feel like we are as ready as ever and we're looking for three points to finish off our season nicely". We know his mentality and that he wants to be one of the best in the world.

Southgate was first out onto the pitch alongside Tottenham striker Harry Kane and the pair spent several minutes deep in conversation as the rest of the players made their way out.

However, Gordon, coming off a treble-winning season with Celtic who could have as many as six players in the side, is aware that Scotland must keep clam heads in what is sure to be a cauldron, with the home team needing a positive result to keep qualification hopes alive.

"We can't wait to get started, it's a great opportunity for us to have a go and be the team that is the first to beat them in a long time". "We are confident in ourselves that we can go out there and do ourselves justice and take something from the game". That's not my view of this group, but they have to step forward at different moments and show it.

Time for a look around! "I think this season he's demonstrated once again why he's one of the best players in the world". Consequently, the former Hibernian player's battle with the England midfield will be an interesting sub-plot in what will be a frantic encounter.

"He's still young and still has a lot of learning to do".

This doesn't mean that Southgate has named him overall England captain - I imagine that role is still Rooney's until he retires.

However, Miller - who earned 65 caps - reckons group leaders England can be beaten.

The most likely candidate to take his place would be David Moyes - nearly as uninspiring a choice as voters across the country have had to make over the past few weeks.
