Williams has served as the Republican baseball team's coach since joining Congress in 2013.

"I heard the first shot and I wasn't sure, I thought maybe it was the backfiring of a auto", Williams said, "but then the second and the third and everybody yelled, 'he's got a gun, run for cover.' So that's what I did".

Republican congressmen and their staff were practicing as they do every morning at 6:30 a.m. EDT at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia, for the Congressional Baseball Game when, at about 7 a.m. EDT, a man later identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Bellevue, Illinois, opened fire on the assembled representatives. Reps. Joe Barton of Ennis - whose two sons also were there - and Mike Conaway of Midland escaped unharmed.

Zachary Barth, a staffer for GOP Rep. Roger Williams of TX, posted on FB that he was shot but is "okay".
