And in February, three days after former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn resigned and two days after The New York Times ran a blockbuster story about Trump campaign aides reported ties to Russian Federation, the president used a news conference to try to divert attention to his old foe. Obstruction of justice is really a very hard crime to make out.

Not stopping there, Donald Trump went back on the attack in a follow-up tweet, once against smearing Hillary Clinton in the process.

"Director Comey said in his testimony that even though the expression [Trump used] was 'hope, ' he took it as a directive", Starr told CNN.

"We don't know a whole lot, but the the answer is no", he added.

"But what we know is he didn't do anything about it, right?"

Comey told the Senate hearing that he believed he was dismissed by Trump because he did not stop the FBI's investigation into Flynn.

The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump's conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

"By the way, it would be great if we could get along with Russian Federation, just so you understand that".

Starr infuriated Democrats during the Bill Clinton impeachment investigation, after an inquiry that started out probing the Whitewater land deal ended up pursuing whether Clinton lied under oath about his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said. "From what I have seen, no".

Starr said of Comey: "I have serious problems with the way Director Comey conducted himself" following Comey's one-on-one conversations with President Trump.
