Twitter unveils updates to its platform

The move follows on from Twitter's brand refresh previous year, in which it adopted the strapline 'See What's Happening' in a bid to cement itself as the home of breaking news and live events.

The changes are reflected across multiple platforms, including on a desktop at, its mobile application for iOS, Android, TweetDeck and Twitter Lite. Profile, multiple accounts, settings and privacy options can now all be found by swiping to a new side navigation menu that's hidden on the right of the screen on iOS.

Twitter is cleaning up its look and enabling people to clear out ads on web pages opened within its iOS apps. This creates "less clutter and easier browsing", Twitter says, although Android users will have already been enjoying this particular update since past year. The links to articles within the Twitter app will no longer open via the in-app browser and will instead switch to Safari's viewer.

The company is focused on expanding its reach to more users.

Like and retweet counts will now update live in the Twitter app in both iOS and Android. The update risks alienating long-time Twitter users who may be reluctant to see yet more elements of the "classic" platform disappear forever. Well, that symbol's being replaced by the more familiar speech bubble (a la rival Instagram). Twitter is now lighter, faster, and easier to use.

Twitter Lite doesn't not come in the list of the usual apps found on the Apple App and Google Play Store.

Some of the icons have been changed so they make a little more sense - such as the reply icon, which has been changed from an arrow to a speech bubble.

The update, which is mostly cosmetic, streamlines the Twitter timeline by turning square profile pictures into circles and cutting down the toolbar on the bottom to four simple icons.

As per website, there are over 8 million Twitter customers in the Philippines now, which can surge to more than 10 million in 2019.
