We have 250000 reasons not to go to Westminster, says Sinn Fein

May was meeting the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Arlene Foster, on Tuesday to discuss a deal for support in parliament, where May's Conservatives lost their majority in last week's election.

Things have moved on a bit since then with Brexit, but we do know they're looking at trying to lower the cost to the Northern Ireland Executive of any move on corporation tax.

The late Martin McGuinness resigned from the Sinn Féin-DUP coalition, triggering the collapse of the regional government under the rules of power-sharing.

He continued to later say: "If there are difficulties with the Northern Ireland executive or with any one of a number of things that might well arise during the Brexit negotiations, it's very important that there's an honest broker - and the only honest broker can be the United Kingdom government".

Secretary of State James Brokenshire and DUP leader Arlene Foster are both in London for talks on the confidence and supply deal that would enable Theresa May's minority government to function.

The DUP leader is nearly certain to ask for greater investment in Northern Ireland as the price of a deal.

The Conservatives are having to rely on the support of 10 DUP MPs after they fell eight seats short of winning an overall majority at the general election.

Mrs May held talks at Downing Street with the other Northern Ireland political parties in an attempt to allay growing concerns that the expected DUP deal would undermine the peace process.

Before travelling to the French capital, Mrs May had been leading the talks with the DUP.

It is thought Mrs Foster, despite being a Brexit supporter, could seek assurances from Mrs May that she will pursue a softer exit from the European Union, given Northern Ireland's 56% Remain vote and the DUP's desire not to see a return to a hard border with Ireland.

Former prime minister says a deal with the DUP could force "hard men" to return to Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister did not mention the ongoing deliberations as she addressed MPs but called on Parliament to "come together in a spirit of national unity" to deal with the challenges facing the country. "I have no doubt over time those responsible will look foolish in the extreme", she said.

"If that's not possible, the Labour Party stands ready to offer strong and stable leadership in the national interest".

But the other Stormont parties have warned that any deal between the DUP and Conservatives could make restoring power sharing more hard.

A Downing Street source said the talks had been "constructive" but refused to put a timescale on when they would conclude. "Scotland voted against Brexit".
