There at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park because they were assigned to Majority Whip Steve Scalise's protective detail, officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey engaged gunman James Hodgkinson in a gun battle that otherwise would have made unarmed and exposed Republican lawmakers sitting ducks.

Tim Kaine introduced the bill Thursday in the Senate, where it passed unanimously. Scalise was the only member of Congress on field who was shot and also remains in the hospital.

To everyone's surprise, US Capitol Police Special Agent Daniel Bailey took the mound at this year's Congressional Baseball Game and threw the ceremonial first pitch.

"He always talked about becoming a police officer, and I remember when he first shared that he was working in Washington, D.C., and that he was a police officer he was so proud", Brooks said.

Bailey was treated and released the same day.

Richmond said he saw Griner and Bailey nearly weekly when they fly home to Louisiana with Scalise.
