It is believed that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Junaid Mattoo, and his associate were the two militants gunned down in the operation. Forces, which already had their hands full with the encounter as well as stone pelters, began combing through the area after fires were put out by fire tenders. He was involved in Mirbazar police party attack where police official Mehmood was killed. Buran Wani's close aid Sabzar Ahmad Bhat was the second militant who was killed in an encounter on May 27 last month.

Among the slain policemen was Feroz Dar, a Station House Officer (SHO), the sources said. Security forces used force to disperse protesters at highway town of Pampore where clashes erupted after the news spread about the killing of LeT ultras.

Mattoo, according to intelligence agencies, had on Thursday killed police constable Sajjad Ahmad at Kulgam, who was vacationing at home.

Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba has claimed the responsibility of deadly attack on a police party that resulted in the death of five policemen including an officer.
