JK policemen killed in Achabal ambush, terrorists disfigure faces

According to a local English daily Greater Kashmir, six policemen including a Station House Officer were killed in a militant attack in southern Achabal area.

Matoo, who carried a bounty of Rs. ten lakh on his head, made headlines by attacking a police van and killing three policemen a year ago and was involved in several attacks on security forces.

Two civilians, one of them a teenager, were killed after security forces opened fire at a crowd marching towards the encounter site. While a search operation has been launched to nab the miscreants, and reportedly the whole area has been cordoned off.

The protests erupted shortly after Friday prayers and were going on when reports last came in, officials said.

Bodies of the three were recovered in the morning on Saturday. Terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is believed to be behind the attack, a senior police official said. Srinagar District Magistrate Farooq Ahmad Lone said Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal were closed to maintain law and order, Greater Kashmir reported.

The encounter broke out at 10 AM at Arwani village in Bijbehara, 51 km from here, in which 10 other civilians were injured, while three militants were trapped inside a house.
