Seeking a third consecutive victory, Oracle Team USA take on Emirates Team New Zealand with the future of the America's Cup on the line, and New Zealand got off to the best possible start, winning the first race.

The Kiwi team continued to excel in light-wind sailing and again showed superior speed and slick manoeuvres, whipping their 50-foot foiling catamaran around the course at a maximum speed of 38.5 kph.

Result: The Challenger won both races, but are only up 1-0 due to the convoluted scoring system that benefited the Defender due to their performance earlier in the qualifier stage. "That would be one hell of a story, that would be one hell of a comeback and that's the kind of thing that I'd like to be part of". Coutts successfully defended the America's Cup in 2000 before jumping to Swiss startup syndicate Alinghi of Switzerland and sweeping his former team in 2003.

And then there was Ted Turner, who earned the nicknames "Mouth of the South" and "Captain Outrageous" en route to successfully defending the America's Cup for the New York Yacht Club in 1977 in Newport, Rhode Island.

The most pleasing aspect for the Kiwis was the speed of their boat in the light conditions of seven to ten knots, Aotearoa New Zealand consistently quicker than the Americans.

"Look, I really try and portray the team", Spithill said Friday after he and Burling posed with the America's Cup. That's his style and that's his natural bent.

Blair Tuke, a crewman on Emirates Team New Zealand, responded with a cartoon of a gassed-looking bald eagle failing to keep up with a trim kiwi speeding away on a bicycle. I know we're much happier starting where we are, without being down on the scoreboard'. “But youre dealing with a very different style of person compared to Dean, in my observation at least.

"It was such a tricky day for both teams, we made a few human errors with our boat handling that we need to work on and address." said Ashby "These guys are only going to get stronger, so we need to also".

Oracle chose to use their high speed foils.

Spithill didn't deny Oracle was preparing a backup boat in case of a smashup. "I thought we were faster than yesterday but unfortunately it's just not enough".
