McCartney, Rowling promoted in the queen's Birthday Honors

The man who led Britain's women's hockey team to Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro a year ago, Danny Kerry, has been named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Thinking Out Loud singer Ed was recognised with an MBE following his incredibly successful year in the entertainment field - and just weeks before his Glastonbury appearance - while fellow singer/songwriter Emeli Sande also gained the incredible MBE title.

Pam has also recently broken an arm, which means she will have to miss this year's Europeans, but she does have a trip to Buckingham Palace to look forward to.

"I love nursing leadership, the honour is not about me it's about nursing, it's one for west Wales nurses, they work incredibly hard and it's the most marvellous profession", said Mrs Oakley.

Dick Greenwood, the former England rugby union captain and coach, receives an OBE for services to national and worldwide rugby.

Award-winners include people as diverse as glass blowers, flint nappers, foster carers and John Hare, who receives his award for "services to conservation of the wild camel in Mongolia and China".

JK Rowling, Sir Paul McCartney and Delia Smith have been awarded the prestigious Order of Companions of Honour.

Others winning recognition included Police Constable Keith Palmer, who was killed as he confronted an attacker with a knife outside Parliament, and Bernard Kenny, a passer-by who tried to protect lawmaker Jo Cox from being stabbed and killed.

Alongside well-known names, many people in the world of business, health and long-time campaigners are also honoured.

Of the 1109 people receiving awards, 554 are women and 10 per cent are from ethnic minorities, she said.

An actor who grew up in Whitley Bay is to receive an MBE at the Queen's Birthday Honours.
