The official added that the South Korean government had assured the USA that it would not revert from its previous commitments regarding the missile defense system, and that the United States had given South Korea the same assurances.

The missiles represent the fourth new missile system North Korea said it has introduced and successfully tested this year, sending a defiant message that it will continue to pursue a weapons program that has rattled its neighbors and Washington.

The news agency said that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un witnessed the launches and that the missiles "accurately detected and hit" floating targets at sea.

These tests have become a difficulty for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who has shown interest in reaching out to North Korea.

The North in following weeks launched a solid-fuel midrange missile that can be fired on shorter notice than liquid fuel missiles, and also what it descried a new "precision-guided" missile, which experts say is designed with a maneuverable terminal stage meant to frustrate missile defense systems like the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense that is being deployed in South Korea.

According to earlier reports by the South Korean media, several anti-ship missiles were launched from the outskirts of the coastal city of Wonsan.

"The series of recent strategic weapons tests show that we are not too far away from test-firing an intercontinental ballistic missile", the Rodong Sinmun, the official paper of the ruling party, said.

The North has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of a year ago in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States - something President Trump has vowed "won't happen".

The Security Council voted unanimously on June 2 to add 15 individuals and four entities linked to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes to a United Nations sanctions blacklist.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday that the suspension of THAAD deployment was "part of the conversations" that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had with Trump at an Oval Office meeting on Thursday.

A greater concern, however, is that North Korea is attempting to produce an ICBM carrying a nuclear warhead that would threaten not merely Guam, but the mainland United States.

A senior USA government official also forecast that the North will likely be ready to test-fire an ICBM within the year.

"Our government, as I have already clarified multiple times, will not back off at all or compromise regarding national security and people's safety", Moon said. The missiles were tested on Thursday.

"The government will unwaveringly make efforts for complete denuclearization of North Korea's nuclear weapons through both sanctions and dialogue".
