Saudi Arabia says it detained three Iranian Revolutionary Guards

The Iranian attack inside Syria came on the same day the United States shot down a Syrian fighter jet that was bombing US-backed Kurdish rebels in Raqqa. Iran has been aiding the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and is a key ally to the Syrian forces alongside Russian Federation and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard announced on Sunday that it launched several missiles into Syria, targeting ISIS fighters in retaliation for the attacks in Tehran on June 7th.

"The coalition's mission is to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria", a statement from the USA -led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria said.

Sharif described the missile strikes as "successful" and warned the IS group and its "regional backers" against launching attacks on Iran.

Russian Federation on Monday threatened aircraft from the USA -led coalition in Syrian-controlled airspace and suspended a hotline meant to avoid collisions in retaliation for the us military shooting down a Syrian warplane.

Emboldened Sunni Arab states backed by Trump have hardened their stance against Iran. The U.S. recently deployed a truck-mounted missile system in Syria as Iranian-backed forces cut off the advance of the U.S. -supported rebels along the Iraqi border.

Deir Az Zor is an oil-rich province that links ISIL's de facto capital, the Syrian city of Raqqa, with territory controlled by the group in neighbouring Iraq.

Sunday's attack was the first time the Zolfaqar has been used in combat.
