Team New Zealand routs Oracle Team USA to win America's Cup

Bendigo-born Glenn Ashby skippered Team New Zealand in Bermuda's Great Sound to a crushing 7-1 victory over Team USA, who were guided by Sydney's Jimmy Spithill.

Burling, a cool and calm 26 years old Olympic gold medal skipper told the press he is not taking the winning for granted, mindful of the Team USA winning races from far behind can likely happen.

New Zealand first won the Auld Mug, as the America's Cup is known, in San Diego in 1995 with the yacht "Black Magic".

Team USA's extended crew not only included Spithill, but also fellow Australians Tom Slingsby, Ky Hurst, Tom Johnson, Kyle Langford, Joey Newton, Sam Newton and Graeme Spence. However, it was not to be.

They led 8-1 in 2013 when the Cup was held in San Francisco, but they couldn't hang on.
