It's been 20 years since J.K. Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - the first of seven books that would eventually become a massive global franchise with films and a theme park. "Because that world is about people trying to make the world a better place, Harry Potter fans are people who also would try to make the world a better place", she said. "It's been wonderful. Thank you", she wrote on Twitter.

"Harry Potter has had a huge impact on a generation of children, who became so obsessed with reading that they would queue for hours to get their hands on the next book", said Diana Gerald, head of the Book Trust, a charity which encourages youngsters to read.

Author JK Rowling had the idea for the stories about a young wizard and his friends and teachers at a school for magic while on a train journey, and she wrote the first book in a small cafe in Edinburgh.

Part of the reason the books are appealing is Rowling's universe creates room for readers to enter and imagine other stories or other characters that might reside in that space, she says. The way the films have been made.although the book fans complain about it, the scale and the visuals of them, are really what continues to inspire thousands in the business.
