Three CNN journalists have turned in their resignations after the broadcaster retracted a story about alleged meetings between an associate of President Donald Trump and a Russian, a spokesperson said Monday.

The story was posted Thursday on CNN's website.

The network has had an oftentimes adversarial relationship with President Trump, who has called CNN "fake news", "very fake news" and the "Clinton News Network".

Three CNN journalists, including the executive editor in charge of a new investigative unit, have resigned after the publication of a Russia-related article that was retracted.

An internal investigation at CNN found that the three journalists-assistant managing editor and Pulitzer Prize victor Eric Lichtblau, Lex Haris, executive editor in charge of investigations, and Pulitzer Prize nominee Thomas Frank-didn't follow all the editorial processes in place for their story, though.

"The story charged that the Senate Intelligence committee was interested in a "$10-billion Russian investment fund whose chief executive met with a member of President Donald Trump's transition team four days before Trump's inauguration", per the New York Post. It had claimed that the the Senate intelligence committee was looking into a discussion on 16 January between Mr Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by USA entities in Russia. Now three members of a new investigative unit at, including the person overseeing it, have resigned from their jobs over the pulled article, which centered on Scaramucci's supposed ties to a Russian investment fund. And the president did not miss the opportunity that CNN's most recent misfire offered, tweeting frequently throughout the morning on Tuesday.

Trump wrote in a Tuesday morning tweet, "Wow, CNN had to retract big story on 'Russia, ' with 3 employees forced to resign. Those are the facts", the CNN Communications account responded shortly afterwards.

"CNN did the right thing".

Still, CNN sources described a glum environment in the wake of the resignations, as staffers watched conservative commentators like Fox News' Sean Hannity revel in CNN's pain.

Haris was named the executive editor of CNN Investigates in January.

Scaramucci accepted the apology and disclosed that he would not sue the network, although he remained critical of the report's integrity. The retracted CNN story was heavily dependent upon on anonymous source. The network commented that they could no longer support the story.

O'Keefe said Project Veritas got the video last Friday and that a portion, in an elevator, was recorded at CNN's headquarters. "I am leaving, but will carry those principles wherever I go". Purveyors of fake news, after all, don't take drastic personnel moves following a bogus story.
