JIT-hit Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif seeks cabinet support

Sharif pointed to the opposition parties who have been demanding his resignation following the release of the report, and said, "The people of Pakistan have elected me and only they can remove me from this post".

Nawaz Sharif said in the last four year, power plants worth billions of rupees had been installed in Karachi, Punjab and other areas.

The Supreme Court is expected to decide the fate of Mr. Sharif when it takes up the JIT report on Monday.

The report by the investigative team goes on to claim the Sharif family had accrued substantial wealth far exceeding their earnings, leading to a call by Opposition leader Imran Khan for Mr Sharif to step down.

The premier observed that the report by the JIT did not present credible documents to contradict the evidence presented by Sharif family adding that it was a combination of baseless allegations put forth by his opponents.

"JIT report REJECTED. Every contradiction will not only be contested but decimated in SC", she wrote, referring to the Supreme Court. But Sharif's allies dismissed all the allegations against him and the report.

The JIT submitted a report to the apex court on July 10 suggesting filing of corruption cases against all persons of the Sharif family named.

Sharif produced documents which she claimed were from 2006, which purported to show she was only a trustee of the high-end properties and did not own them. Investigators noticed that documents handed over by the prime minister's daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, were typed up in the font Calibri.

The high-profile graft case is about alleged money laundering by Sharif in 1990s when he twice served as the Prime Minister to purchase assets in London.

Although Sharif narrowly escaped disqualification from a five-member Supreme Court bench, the investigation's findings could prove harder to dodge.

The prime minister asked if there was any corruption of even a rupee in any of the motorway or energy projects initiated by the PML-N government.
