A planned vote on the Senate healthcare bill has been delayed at least a week by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after Sen.

John McCain is healthy enough to return to Washington, Senate Democrats are asking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his top committee chairmen to hold hearings on the measure. Senator McCain underwent surgery to remove a blood clot and will be recovering for about a week resulting in a delay of the vote.

A close vote had already been predicted for the GOP health care bill, with all Democrats and independents coming out against it and some Republicans opposed or undecided.

Mayo Clinic Hospital doctors said Saturday that McCain underwent a "minimally invasive" procedure to remove the almost 2-inch (5-centimeter) clot, and that the surgery went "very well".

Mr McCain has said he is concerned about the impact of proposed Medicaid cuts on his home state, and last Thursday said that he could not say if he would support Mr McConnell's new Bill. Senator John McCain is recuperating from surgery and McConnell announced on Saturday that consideration of the legislation will have to wait until McCain recovers. Already, two GOP senators-Susan Collins from ME and Rand Paul from Kentucky-have pledged not to vote for the new bill, and McConnell can't afford to lose any more senators, including McCain, to pass the bill.

Republican senators Susan Collins of ME and Rand Paul of Kentucky are against it, and others have expressed concern.

A week ago, McConnell chose to cancel the first two weeks of the Senate's traditional August recess to allow more time for deliberations on the health bill and other issues.

"I don't think he does" have the votes", Paul said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday". "The individual marketplace is the only real problem", Schrader said. "Mayo Clinic doctors report that the surgery went "very well" and he is in good spirits".

A chorus of senators weighed in on McCain's recovery via Twitter, including the Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. "There are few people tougher than my friend John McCain, and I know he'll be back with us soon", McConnell said in the statement. He is recovering at home in Arizona.

The delay on the health care vote meant yet another setback for the effort to repeal Obamacare that once seemed to be a done deal after years of promises from Republicans.
