Minn. School Building Collapses After Possible Gas Explosion

Earlier the school had identified the first person killed as Ruth Berg, who had worked there for 17 years.

"He wasn't scheduled to work today but he came in anyway", said the friend, Dave Swanson, who stood watch during the search on behalf of Carlson's wife, who couldn't be there. Our focus at this time is making the area safe.

Jacobson, the school spokeswoman, said Carlson graduated with the Minnehaha Academy class of 1953 and went to Sunday school there.

A school gym coach said that the explosion came seconds after an alarm was raised. Nine people were taken to the hospital.

Day leapt for the door just as the center of the south Minneapolis private school building exploded, the blast knocking her to the floor.

The hospital says five people have since been released, but that one person is still in critical condition.

Police and fire officials said a body of a staff member was found in the rubble of the building that collapsed.

Fire crews have spent hours searching through the rubble.

All the injured were adults, Tyner said.

Four people remained hospitalized with injuries, including one in critical condition.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said the state was in touch with local authorities to assist in the response.

MINNEAPOLIS - School officials say all students are safe following an explosion at a private school in Minneapolis, though authorities say one person was killed and another is missing.

School officials said all of the students - some of whom were on the field at the time, and many of whom were in the gym - had been accounted for. It read: "There was a gas leak and explosion at the Upper School".

The academy has about 825 students in grades Pre-K through 12, housed on two campuses.

Minneapolis issued a permit June 7 to Master Mechanical Inc. of Eagan for "gas piping and hooking up meter" at the address.

Larsen wouldn't confirm to The Associated Press that company workers were on site, saying: "We are trying to figure it out".

Officials said two floors collapsed over a sub-basement now filled with water they used to extinguish the fire.

Berg and Doepke's mother both live near Minnehaha Academy, so when he heard about the explosion, he immediately went to the scene.

In an interview with The Washington Post he said Berg was "always very positive, always smiling".

Tyner emphasized that the two unaccounted for might not even be in the building.

One of the first things John Barron saw in the immediate aftermath of the explosion were his neighbors running toward the scene.

Another trio was said to have been rescued from the roof of the school.

Crews were checking the structural integrity of the building.
