Exchanges, cooperation between India-China can soothe ties: Chinese envoy

Now, the Times of India reports, a top Chinese academic has written in the state organ that China is planning a "small-scale military operation to expel Indian troops within two weeks".

Indian and Chinese troops continue to be locked in a standoff in Doklam and both sides have moved additional troops, ammunition and military equipment to the area.

Earlier, China had emphatically rejected India's interference in its ongoing boundary dispute with Bhutan in the Doklam area and again urged New Delhi to withdraw unconditionally and end the almost two-month long stand-off.

The editorial comes a day after the Chinese Defence Ministry said that India should not test its patience over Doklam and that "restraint has a bottom line".

India-born United Kingdom economist and politician Meghnad Desai predicted this week that the military standoff between India and China on the Doklam plateau near the Sikkim border, could soon come to a full-scale war.

This means discussions on this segment of the boundary falls within the remit of talks on all the disputed parts of the India-China frontier between the special representatives, the second person said, also asking not to be named. But the annual drill was suspended for four years after the first two editions in Kunming (2007) and Belagavi (2008), because of a raging diplomatic row on multiple visa issues, compounded by border frictions. If there is war, it will be a US-China war, with India on the US side, in the South China Sea and in the Himalayas.

Desai also suggested that India should not make the mistake of equating the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) with the Pakistani Army. But China has been lashing out at India nearly every day, seeking immediate withdrawal of Indian troops from the area. "So, a solution will definitely emerge if we engage in dialogue on bilateral relations", Swaraj said in Rajya Sabha.

An editorial published in the Global Times claimed that the Chinese PLA has "sufficient preparation for military confrontation" and that it would be "a war with an obvious result".

The two sides' troops then confronted each other close to a valley controlled by China that separates India from its close ally, Bhutan, and gives China access to the so-called Chicken's Neck, a thin strip of land connecting India and its remote northeastern regions. She underlined that China had been contributing to India's economic growth and had huge stakes in the country. It said the Modi government should stop "lying".

India on Wednesday had reiterated that peace and tranquility along Indo-China border is an important prerequisite for smooth development of bilateral relations between the New Delhi and Beijing.

India claims that China's road construction is an effort to get close to Doka La-which lies on the western edge of the Doklam plateau and is the last Indian military post on its border with Bhutan and China.

China has put its foot down and demanded that Indian troops be immediately withdrawn to end the military standoff.

"It has already been more than a month since the incident, and India is still not only illegally remaining on Chinese territory, it is also repairing roads in the rear, stocking up supplies, massing a large number of armed personnel".
