He's done a great job with England on two occasions, b ut at the moment Russell Domingo is head coach of South Africa and doing a brilliant job.

Bairstow had still guided England from the precarious position of 260-6 overnight to a now-formidable 362.

While there is yet to be any public announcement on Gibson's future, Paul Farbrace, England's assistant coach, appeared to inadvertently confirm the appointment after the opening day's play of the final Test against South Africa at Old Trafford.

The left-hander - dropped by Dean Elgar at slip on 15 off Keshav Maharaj - reached his fifty off 49 balls in glorious fashion by lofting the spinner for a straight six that was safely pouched by team-mate Jonny Bairstow on the England players' balcony.

Despite being set for a morale-boosting Test victory over South Africa, selectors will be anxious about the batting line-up with just three Tests against a depleted West Indies to come before they travel to Australia for the biggest Test series of them all against Australia. Moeen was especially severe on Maharaj, hitting him for three resounding sixes. A rampant Moeen Ali took away the game in the fading twilight at Old Trafford but the game continued to enthral fans around the globe.

Moeen struck three sixes on his way to 67 not out off 59 balls before rain ended play for the day with England leading by 360 runs after bowling South Africa out for 226 in the visitors' first innings.

South Africa's first-innings batting had left them with an extremely hard task but their bowlers were not intent on ending the series without a fight.

Knowing the importance of a good start, Faf du Plessis gave Morne Morkel an eight-over spell up front that yielded the wickets of Alastair Cook and Tom Westley.

Question marks remain about Keaton Jennings after the opener made just 17.

When asked about it, England assistant coach Paul Farbrace took a similar stance to the European Central Bank, saying that everything will be looked into once the Test series ends.

However, the wicket-taker was not the home hero, James Anderson, who had needed one more scalp for his maiden five-wicket haul on his home ground, but his partner-in-crime Stuart Broad, who induced a top-edged pull from Duanne Olivier that Jonny Bairstow pocketed, running back from the slip cordon.
