The latest identification was the first in more than two years, The New York Times reported. About 1,112 remains of those victims remain unidentified, the medical examiner's office said.

A total of 2,996 people died on the day of the attack, when planes hijacked by Al-Qaeda operatives crashed into the World Trade Center in NY, a wing of the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.

16 years later, medical examiners have confirmed the findings of a man who was killed at the World Trade Center.

There were 2,753 people killed when two hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center's Twin Towers on the morning of September 11, 2011.

It said new DNA technology helped identify him after previous tests yielded no results.

As DNA testing advanced, so has the multimillion-dollar effort to connect more than 21,900 bits of remains to individual victims.

After some time, the therapeutic analyst's office came to utilize a procedure that includes beating the sections to remove DNA, at that point contrasting it with the workplace's gathering of hereditary material from casualties or their relatives.

Few full bodies were recovered after the twin towers burned and collapsed, with the effects of heat, bacteria and chemicals such as jet fuel making it hard to analyse the remains.

It's thought that a total of 2,996 lost their lives that day in NY as well as at the Pentagon in Virginia and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, while thousands more were injured.
