Japan says 'can never tolerate' North Korea provocations

North Korea has made no secret of its plans to develop a nuclear-tipped missile able to strike the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons programs.

The United Nations sanctioned North Korea due to their recent missile tests.

The army will complete its plans in mid-August, ready for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's order, KCNA reported, citing General Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army.

Asian stocks fell, with South Korea's benchmark index and Japan's Nikkei both closing down more than 1 percent, while gold and the safe-haven yen strengthened.

Experts say you should not panic - just yet.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman said in an interview with WCPO Wednesday, "We've got to also make clear to our allies and to our enemies like North Korea that. we're going to stand firm".

"(The North's bellicose rhetoric) seems to be aimed at binding its society together, stoking anxiety within the South and undercutting the South Korea-US alliance and Washington's North Korea policy".

Seoul is home to roughly 10 million people and within range of massed North Korean rockets and artillery, which would be impossible to destroy in a first U.S. strike.
