Glen Campbell said goodbye to his life, career through music

Campbell continued to make music, tour, and appear in movies and on television in the decades that followed. In 1968, he took home the CMA's Entertainer of the Year award.

Glen Campbell has died at 81, leaving the music industry in a state of mourning.

Brian Wilson, a former member of the Beach Boys, has commented on the death of his colleague and friend in a message poignant: "I am shocked to learn the news about my friend Glen Campbell". He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2011 and rather than retreating, went on a farewell tour that dealt with his illness and decline with the same candor he'd addressed his relationship troubles and addiction struggles earlier in his life.

The devastating impact of the ailment was revealed, among other details, in the 2014 documentary, Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me.

Campbell made history in 1967 by winning four Grammys in the country and pop categories.

"Studies would suggest that people age 80 years and older, about 30 percent have dementia of the Alzheimer's type, and I think it gives us the opportunity to talk about the disease", Dr. Wright said. Campbell would forget the words to songs, his documentarian later said, but not the music.

"He wanted to tell the story of his Alzheimer's disease", Keach told America's ABC News.

Also featured in the film was the song "I'm Not Gonna Miss You", which Campbell had written and recorded with Raymond. Stark, specific and unsentimental, its few simple lines convey profound loss, both for Alzheimer's sufferers and those who love them. His farewell tour was captured in an Oscar-nominated documentary called "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me".
