A New York Police Department (NYPD) officer late Thursday was shot and wounded during a standoff with a suspect near a Brooklyn home, local officials said.

They said the officer was shot about 5 p.m.by a man who appeared to have a rifle and who then barricaded himself in a home on Chestnut Avenue in the Cypress Hill neighborhood. Two other shots hit his bulletproof vest.

When officers arrived and approached the front of the building, the suspect opened gunfire and struck an officer several times, the commissioner said. Police said the officer was being treated at a hospital.

When the emergency services unit made it inside, they found the suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound with two guns laying by his side, along with ammunition.

O'Neill said the gunman's mother first called 911.

At a press conference later in the evening, the mayor said Nguyen is from the 75th Precinct, has more than two years of experience on the job and was in good spirits during the visit.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the shooting, according to a tweet from his office. His attacker killed himself after an armed standoff in Brooklyn, police said.

The disturbed man remained inside the rear bedroom after the shooting, police said.

A police source told PIX11 that a female officer was shot several times in the chest and once in the arm. "This young man was definitely saved by his vest".

As for the officer, he was rushed to Jamaica Hospital and it already on the mend.
