Reports surfaced Monday morning that Goodell is close to signing a contract extension that would keep him as the NFL's commissioner through 2024.

Goodell, whose current deal is set to end in 2019, has at times been at odds with some of the league's most powerful owners.

The 58-year-old Goodell took over as National Football League commissioner in 2006, filling the vacancy left by the retirement of Paul Tagliabue.

The league is working on a five-year contract extension for Goodell, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.

US Secret Service Spends Year's Overtime Pay on 'Large' Trump's Family
One week after launching his presidential campaign, in 2015, Donald Trump pledged to become a shut-in at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. POTUS has also taken trips to his Bedminster golf course in New Jersey , as well as one visit to his home town of NY .

It is interesting timing considering Goodell looks headed toward another legal fight over a suspension, likely has less support from one of the league's most influential owners, Jerry Jones, than before, and is nearly certainly on the path to a labor dispute in 2021. His ability to negotiate the terms of the current CBA made the owners a lot of money. He earned just over $31 million for the 2015 season, down from about $34 million in 2014.

The NFL has grown rapidly under Goodell's stewardship, with revenue expected to reach $14 billion by fiscal year 2017. Many believe he also contributed to what was a complete botching of the Deflategate investigation with the New England Patriots.

There have been plenty of other major controversies during Goodell's leadership: the ongoing concussion lawsuits and settlements, Ray Rice's domestic violence incident, Michael Vick's dog-fighting ring, Ben Roethlisberger's sexual assault allegations, and more.
