Trump hits Harvey, NAFTA and border wall in wide-ranging morning of tweets

Already, negotiations are getting bogged down by Trump's demand that Republican leadership pair legislation with a rider that includes funding for his border wall-funding that Democrats have said they will reject.

The rest of the fall legislative calendar is likely to be consumed by a battle over a government spending bill that could result in a shutdown, or a debt-ceiling crisis, if Congress and the president can't agree.

But Democrats oppose including the wall in the spending bill, and Republican leaders will struggle to pass it, while also opposing a government shutdown.

Since taking office, Trump has called for Congress to allocate money for the wall instead and have Mexico pay the U.S. back. She tweeted that the email's objective was to provide reporters with "research on Trump's lies" and noted that DNC chair Tom Perez earlier this month said a massive border wall along the southern border of the USA is "ludicrous" and a waste of tax dollars. "Make no mistake: The President said he will purposefully hurt American communities to force American taxpayers to fund an immoral, ineffective and expensive border wall".

The most controversial aspect of the speech was the President's threat to shut down the government if he did not receive the necessary funding for the Mexican border wall he had promised to build during his election campaign.

Representative Nita Lowey of NY, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, called Trump's threat the "polar opposite of leadership" and said the president should be held accountable if the government shuts down.

He wrote, "With Mexico being one of the highest crime Nations in the world, we must have THE WALL". Each previous incident saw the markets bounce back, which suggests that the President's latest outburst will likely not have a lasting effect on Wall Street.

Trump's renewed focus on the border comes at a time when he is under increased scrutiny over another Washington Post report that claims he once asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end the government's criminal contempt of court case against former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. It also contains $1.6 billion for the construction of a physical wall along the southern border.

Trump accused Mexico of being "very difficult" at the negotiating table over the North American Free Trade Agreement, and threatening anew to terminate the deal.
