Khosrowshahi was essentially the dark horse in the competition for Uber's next CEO, given numerous news reports pegged two other CEO candidates - GE chairman Jeff Immelt and Hewlett Packard Enterprises CEO Meg Whitman - as front runners.

Uber's board of directors, on which Kalanick still sits, voted unanimously to confirm Khosrowshahi as the CEO on Sunday.

"We're really fortunate to gain a leader with Dara's experience, talent and vision", the email read.

Khosrowshahi will lead Uber's efforts to bring about change to its corporate culture and improve its reputation following claims of sexism, racism and sexual harassment within the company. In a memo to his now former employees, Dara Khosrowshahi, 48, says, "I have to tell you I'm scared".

His family escaped Iran on the eve of the Iranian Revolution in 1978, when... "At some point, I expect the company to be public, but that's up to the board".

The Uber board on Monday voted to select Mr Khosrowshahi as the company's next leader to replace co-founder Travis Kalanick, who was ousted in June under shareholder pressure, sources told Reuters.

Dara Khosrowshahi has been the chief executive of Expedia since 2005.

Hurricane Harvey causes flight cancellations at Orlando International Airport
An additional 1,115 flights have already been canceled for Sunday, according to USA Today , as have another 360 for Monday. Hurricane Harvey has strengthened to a Category 2 storm and is expected to become a Category 3 before it makes landfall.

Today's changing of the guard is a major "reset" for Uber, and as Recode puts it, "While some of the staff were the ones responsible for all the messes - ranging from regulatory missteps to dysfunctional management to toxic workplace behaviors to legal minefields - a great swath of Uber's 16,000 staffers are blameless, and just trying to do their jobs". He already did that in his pitch to Kalanick and the rest of the Uber board last Friday, asking in one slide of his presentation for them to leave him be in order to do his job.

Benchmark says Kalanick concealed material information regarding internal problems and external litigation threats past year when investors granted him authority to fill three new board seats.

Benchmark also blamed Kalanick for a slew of Uber scandals, including his involvement in trade-secret theft claims tied to a lawsuit by Alphabet Inc.'s self-driving auto business and accusations of workplace hostility to women.

He joined San Francisco-based Uber's all-hands staff meeting Wednesday to take questions from employees.

In a following tweet she made this even clearer: "We have a lot of work still to do at HPE and I am not going anywhere".

Beyond the boardroom battle, Khosrowshahi faces a long list of challenges at Uber. She left as a result of this acquisition, receiving a $186 million payout in the process, and now is reportedly looking for her next role at a company as the CEO.
