How Kezia Dugdale made Mission: Impossible more hard for herself

The Scottish Co-operative Party backed Ms Dugdale in the race for the leadership of the Scottish Labour Party, which she won in August 2015, just four years after being elected to the Scottish parliament.

The Sunday Herald newspaper in Scotland devoted two pages last weekend to speculating that the Corbynistas were out to depose Dugdale, along with Brian Roy, the Scottish party secretary, and, indeed, Iain McNicol, the United Kingdom general secretary - to make way for Corbyn's true believers.

She pitched Scottish Labour as a boring version of the nationalists, suggesting reforms which would pull Scotland further apart from the Union but stopping short of the exciting proposition of independence.

While Labour outperformed most forecasts north of the border at the June general election, the Conservatives did even better, gaining 12 seats and appearing to threaten the Scottish National Party hegemony.

Rowley is the current deputy leader of the Scottish Labour party, and as such will become the interim leader in Dugdale's absence.

Maybe Scottish Labour will finally see some sense and elect a leader who is willing to support Jeremy Corbyn rather than attacking him at every turn, and capable of offering a left-wing opposition to the SNP government, rather than a hopelessly out-of-touch shell of a political party that refuses to change direction and exists by complacently relying on a severely diminished legacy vote, and desperately riding on Jeremy Corbyn's coat tails whilst simultaneously slagging him off.

The Scots party leader quit last night insisting it was time to hand on the baton.

Her resignation came the day after her birthday, with Dugdale saying being leader had been "a hard but fulfilling challenge".

Scottish Labour bosses will wait more than a week before discussing the contest to succeed Kezia Dugdale.

Chair of the Edinburgh Southern Constituency Labour Party and Labour Hame editor Duncan Hothersall said he was proud to have stood beside Dugdale, and thanked her for "reminding people what Scottish Labour is all about".

His decision not to run follows fellow left-winger Neil Findlay ruling himself out of the contest.

Dugdale's period in charge has coincided with some turbulence in her private life, however.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "We may be opponents, but @kezdugdale led her party with guts and determination and I admired her for that".

The Executive Committee of the Scottish Labour Party will meet next weekend, Saturday 9 September 2017, to agree the timetable and process for a leadership election. But if she was wanting to stand down it's good she's doing it now to help us prepare for the next Scottish elections. I love this party too much for that to be my way.

Aikman died, aged 31, of motor neurone disease in February.

It was clear that Dugdale wanted to leave on her own terms, despite previously saying that she meant to stay on as leader past the 2021 Scottish Parliament election.

But despite shedding office staff, after signs of a revival at the general election, many believed she would stay on to fight the 2021 Scottish elections.

Rowley is now the party's deputy leader.
