"Bake Off" cooks up ratings success for C4

With seven day viewing figures, that number rose to 13.58, so we can also expect the number of Channel 4 viewers to increase significantly with on demand streaming. Television Festival last week, Hunt, who is exiting her role at Channel 4 at the end of September, tried to downplay expectations that Channel 4's viewing figures could match those seen for the final season on BBC One.

The episode peaked at 7.7 million, which is a figure that dwarfs most Channel 4 factual entertainment shows. A typical C4 show on a Tuesday evening gets a million viewers.

Sophie Faldo, 33, is one of twelve bakers to enter the tent in this year's Great British Bake Off.

The numbers do not include those watching on the broadcaster's catch up service All 4.

When it was announced that The Great British Bake Off was heading for Channel 4 and leaving Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins and dear old Mary Berry behind, we were outraged to say the least.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it's become Channel 4's biggest show of the year, racking up nearly double the viewers over their previous victor, Diana: In Her Own Words, which managed 3.5 million.

Plus, as always, the audience at home and in the studio will be able to show off their bakes, from the delightful, the delicious to the downright disastrous.

"Adverts in GBBO is just wrong", was one of the tamer Twitter reactions to the first break, with others using rather more colourful language to express their feelings over the interruptions to the reality show.

The Great British Bake Off is returning tonight (August 29) and whilst some are excited for the show, some face a frightful dilemma.
