Human cases of West Nile discovered in 3 MI counties

Health department officials urge all county residents to protect themselves from diseases carried by mosquitoes such as West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and St. Louis Encephalitis throughout the rest of the mosquito season.

The ages of the victims was not released.

In more serious cases, West Nile results in neurological disease and death.

"The virus is here, and (historically) we know that WNv-carrying mosquitoes will be around well into the fall, " said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health with the EOHU.

To protect yourself against mosquito bites, use insect repellent with DEET.

Health officials say tests also detected the virus in the blood of five MI blood donors this year.

While these are the first confirmed human cases there are 148 birds that have tested positive for West Nile in 44 or Michigan's 83 counties.

"The higher wind from a fan will help keep the mosquitoes from landing on you", said Hausbeck.

"This is the time of year when we begin seeing human cases of West Nile virus", Mark Pfister, the health department's executive director, said in the statement. Symptoms of the disease include fever, chills, headache, neck pain and stiffness, joint pain and stiffness, and mental confusion, noted Dr. Soule. More mosquitoes, means more problems for you. According to the state, one in five persons who contracted West Nile Virus will have mild illness and fever, but one in 150 will become severely ill. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says West Nile virus was confirmed in eight horses, including at least one in Ottawa County.
