"The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Brissett, 24, is coming off perhaps one of the greatest preseason performances by a quarterback in National Football League history on Thursday, as he completed 28-of-39 passes for 341 yards with four touchdowns and an interception - adding a rushing touchdown, as well - in the Patriots' 40-38 loss to the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium".

With uncertainty surrounding the status of Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Andrew Luck's availability to start the season, the Colts have made a trade. He has 51 career receptions for 753 yards and three touchdowns in 26 games (seven starts). He also rushed for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Jacoby Brissett was traded by the Patriots to the Colts on Saturday afternoon. With the loss of Cyrus Jones to an ACL tear, the newcomer is likely to receive a crash course in the return game before Thursday's opener against Kansas City.

Dorsett, 23, was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round (29th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morrishad been competing for the backup spot, though the trade for Brissett suggests the Colts fancy him as a potential backup for Luck.

The Patriots selected Brissett with the 91st overall pick in the third round of the 2016 draft out of North Carolina State. The Patriots' options to keep him would be an extension or even the unorthodox move of franchise tagging their backup-but if they believe that he's the unusual guy who could maintain success post-Brady, they'll find a way to make it work.

The Patriots and Colts are both dealing with significant injuries to start the year.

A talent like that might easily be in line for a practice-squad position, but Carr may have actually showed too much receiving ability to clear waivers. The fourth preseason game, Brissett appeared to be playing for his job and responded accordingly. One of the core special-teamers, running back Brandon Bolden, was also released, which seemed less surprising as the Patriots traded for one special-teamer after another over the past few days.

The Patriots kept four undrafted free agents, hanging onto tight end Jacob Hollister, defensive lineman Adam Butler, linebacker Harvey Langi, and offensive lineman Cole Croston.
