"President Moon Jae-in said the country will never allow North Korea to continue advancing its nuclear and missile technologies", Moon's key security adviser Chung Eui-yong said.

North Korean state television said on Sunday that, "The hydrogen bomb test was a ideal success", adding that the device was capable of being loaded onto long-range missiles.

In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he "would not tolerate" another nuclear test.

The blast came hours after Pyongyang issued images of Kim Jong-un inspecting the hydrogen bomb designed for ICBMs.

Japan has also concluded that tremors detected in North Korea were a nuclear explosion, marking the sixth atomic test by Pyongyang since 2006. That detonation, which was about as powerful as the bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, defied U.N. sanctions.

"Underlining the need for the institute to dynamically conduct the campaign for successfully concluding the final-stage research and development for perfecting the state nuclear force, he set forth tasks to be fulfilled in the research into nukes", said the report.

Independent nuclear experts told CNN that another test would likely be a way to increase the yield, or destructive power, of a weapon.

The Chinese are saying the second natural disaster may be a cave-in caused by the test.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was too early to determine if a test, if there was one, supported the North's claim that has succeeded in developing a thermonuclear weapon, "much less one that could be mounted on an ICBM and re-enter Earth's atmosphere without burning up". That claim was met with skepticism by experts.

The North conducted two nuclear tests previous year alone.

North Korea watchers say that could be imminent.

What has the reaction been?

Witnesses in the Chinese city of Yanji, on the border with North Korea, said they felt a tremor that lasted roughly 10 seconds, followed by an aftershock.

According to the White House, the two leaders reaffirmed the importance of close cooperation between the US, Japan and South Korea in the face of the growing threat from North Korea. Talking is not the answer!"Trump said in a Twitter post". The test also prompted the United Nations to issue new sanctions on the country.

He said New Zealand will join the global community in considering a response.

She said it is absolutely vital there be continued pressure from the worldwide community to support peace and de-escalation of conflict on the Korean peninsula.
