Kenya's Supreme Court has ordered a new 2017 presidential election after finding irregularities in last month's vote, and polls of potential voters along with election experts believe the results of the second vote could be remarkably similar to the first.

The country's electoral commission had already declared incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta the victor of last month's election, with 54.3 percent of the vote in a contest were almost 80 percent of Kenya's 19 million registered voters were said to have cast ballots. Odinga added that he had "no faith at all in the electoral commission as now constituted" and called for the prosecution for its members.

"I think those robes they wear make them think that they are more clever than the rest of us Kenyans", Kenyatta said of the Supreme Court judges, taking aim at Maraga.

Following the Supreme Court decision, supporters of Odinga have taken to the streets to celebrate.

In the wake of the ruling, President Kenyatta called for peace, hoping to avoid a recurrence of the violence that erupted in the days after the election and left eleven people dead.

The disputed 2007 election led to politically-motivated ethnic violence in which over 1,100 people were killed.

"All electoral processes can be improved, and we will continue to support Kenya's institutions in this important work", the statement said.

However, President Uhuru Kenyatta has lashed out at the judges, saying that "six people have decided they will go against the will of the people". He also said the role of global observers who came to Kenya for the vote must be examined because they put stability ahead of credibility and had "moved fast to sanitize fraud".

But he also expressed concern over the integrity of election officials, calling for some to be prosecuted, and said it was "unimaginable" a new poll could be conducted in just two months.

After the election, global monitors from the EU, the African Union and the USA had said there was no major fraud on polling day and urged Mr Odinga to concede.

The court said that President Kenyatta was not elected properly.

The ruling sets the stage for a rematch between Kenyatta, the mild-mannered son of Kenya's first post-independence president, and Odinga, a populist who has run for president unsuccessfully twice before.

Mr Kenyatta's win was yesterday declared "invalid, null and void" by four Supreme Court judges, who cited irregularities "in the transmission of results". Global election observers had said they saw no interference with the vote.

The embattled leader argued that the results of the members of parliament, senators and governors were transmitted but "no one asked any questions". The official results had given Kenyatta 54 percent of the vote to Odinga's 44 percent.
