Trevorrow is best known for directing Jurassic World and has been working on the ninth instalment of the space saga for some time. Creative control for directors extends only so far when the stakes are this high - Star Wars generates billions of dollars in revenue through movie tickets, DVDs, video games and merchandise sales. But Star Wars is becoming less and less about taking risks as it goes on.

Colin Trevorrow is no longer directing "Star Wars: Episode IX".

There's only one director the company has brought in that's produced both and script and a movie with zero issues: Rian Johnson, whose work on The Last Jedi has been so amazingly smooth, it's endangered of being overshadowed.

Star Wars and film fans online responded to Trevorrow's departure with snarky jokes and celebration.

Fisher's work had been completed on The Last Jedi and Leia will be given a "send-off" in the film, but she was at one point meant to be a major part of Episode IX. But with a line around the corner of capable directors, young and old, who want to work on these movies, it's hard not to come up with the right formula by picture lock.

Also, though Trevorrow's horrific flop of an indie film The Book of Henry was not mentioned, ever since it was released in June, whispers had been circulating that this might in fact be the upshot of it. But "Star Wars" has the unique advantage of having incredible resources that it can rebound.

It's near impossible to know just where Luke will end up by the time that The Last Jedi ends at this point, with Mark Hamill previously saying that the film's version of Luke Skywalker found a way to seemingly defy all of his expectations for the character going into it.
