Abu Salem sentenced to life in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case

A court on Thursday sentenced to death two men convicted of involvement in India's most deadly bombings, a series of blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people in 1993, while two others were jailed for life. If the jail sentence is commuted to 25 years then Salem will spend 13 more years in jail as he has already been in prison for 12 years.

The court, on 16 June 2017, had found six individuals guilty, including gangster Abu Salem.

Besides Salem, the Special Court awarded life sentence to Karimullah Khan and 10 years rigorous imprisonment to the fifth convict, Riyaz Siddiqui.

Salem, who was close to (absconding accused Dawood Ibrahim's brother) Anees Ibrahim and Dossa, took upon himself the task of bringing a part of arms and ammunition from Dighi to Mumbai, the court had said.

All the accused were facing multiple charges like criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government and murder of people.

Court sentenced the Convicts for different offenses.

Special Judge G.A. Sanap pronounced the death verdict on Mohammed Taher Merchant, 55 and Feroze Abdul Rashid Khan, 47, for their role in the blasts, said Salvi.

The court has given the death sentence for the two accused in the Mumbai 1993 blast. The other culprits should have been awarded death sentence.

But Abu Salem, who was extradited to India in 2005 from Portugal, may not have to spend his entire life in jail. "The country is committed to punishing them", the BJP spokesperson said, adding with the sentencing of the five accused, justice has finally been delivered to those behind the attack.

Central Bureau of Investigation informed that Dossa, Merchant, and Feroz were the main conspirators for 1993 Mumbai Blasts case.Today, the five were sentenced a special terrorist and disruptive activities (Prevention) Act Court.

He added that as per Indian laws, life sentence is imprisonment till death, but under Portuguese laws, the maximum punishment is 25 years, neither life nor the death penalty. The court fined both Abu Salem and Karimullah Rs 2 lakh.

Salem, who was a prime suspect in the 1993 Mumbai bombings, was arrested in Portugal in 2002.
