JKLF chief Yasin Malik arrested in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front or JKLF chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik was arrested in Srinagar on Thursday.

Seven senior resistance leaders and three other persons including a businessman and a photojournalist have been arrested and are now in detention in Delhi.

Following the raids, the Agency on August 17 arrested prominent Srinagar-based businessman Zahoor Ahmad Shah Watali, who was sent to police custody till Monday by a Special NIA Judge at Patiala House court.

Besides, the NIA team also raided and searched the house of JKLF leader Showkat Ahmad Bakshi.

Sources said that people in hundreds started marching towards the residence of Hasan after, they accused NIA slueths of misbehaving with the family and harassment.

This is for the first time since the rise of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in the early 1990s that a central probe agency has conducted raids in connection with the funding of terrorist and separatist groups. During searches fixed deposits of Rs 1 crore and "incriminating documents" and "suspicious financial records" and electronic devices were seized, the NIA said.

When asked whether the raids would continue, he said, "no comments".

The NIA sleuths earlier during the day on Wednesday conducted raids at 27 locations in Srinagar, Delhi and Gurugram in a follow up to similar raids conducted and arrests made during the past couple of weeks.

Litigators continued to suffer as lawyers across the valley abstained from work due to a strike called by High Court (HC) Bar Association, Kashmir, against National Investigation Agency's summon to its president advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom in connection with terror funding in the state.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate is likely to register a money laundering case against some separatist leaders facing investigation by the NIA on charges of receiving terror funding from across the border to stoke unrest in the valley.
