"If you go to a shelter for #Irma and you have a warrant we will gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail", Sheriff Grady Judd tweeted.

A Florida sheriff has offered shelter to any residents with outstanding warrants seeking refuge from Hurricane Irma - the Polk County jail.

Sexual predators and offenders, however, are never welcome at shelters, he said, and which is something they are told when they are placed on the sex offender registry.

"If you go to a shelter for #Irma, be advised: sworn LEOs will be at every shelter, checking IDs", reads the series of tweets.

The Daily Beast spoke with a representative from the sheriff's office, who said arrest was "a risk a person would run" if they showed up seeking shelter with an outstanding warrant.

She said they're hoping people who have warrants will turn themselves in and use the next few days to deal with their legal issues.
