"I believe [only offering answers] was a mistake because a lot of people didn't want to hear my plans - they wanted me to share their anger".

The interview kicks off of Clinton's promo campaign for her forthcoming book What Happened, to be released on Tuesday by CBS' Simon & Schuster imprint.

However, Clinton added she was not finished with politics entirely because our "future is at stake".

Clinton said that stereotypes, sexism, and misogyny played a role in why people could not wrap their brains around electing a female president into office. Although she stated that the email issue was her responsibility, she said when former FBI director James Comey reopened the investigation before the end of her campaign, he was possibly playing into "maybe some, you know, right-wing commentators, right-wing members of Congress, whatever".

Choking back tears, Clinton described the pain of attending Trump's inauguration - and listening to her victorious opponent's speech, which she called a "cry from the white nationalist gut".

Clinton reiterated her argument that Comey's decision fewer than two weeks before the election to publicly re-open - and later close - the investigation into her email practices derailed the campaign, asking why Comey did not announce that he was also investigating Trump's potential ties to Russian Federation.

Clinton then called Trump to congratulate him on being elected and followed that up with a call to President Obama.

"Can we talk about election day, " she asked gently."Did you have any clue what the outcome of that day would be".

"I just went into the bedroom, laid down on the bed, i just thought 'Okay".

"But I am not done with politics".

'It was a gift, ' Pauley noted.

"[Former President Barack Obama] urged me to grit my teeth and lay off Bernie as much as I could", Clinton wrote of the Independent senator from Vermont.

"Trump was behaving in a deplorable manner", she said, citing the Access Hollywood tape. As Clinton was explaining how candidate Trump played to the "millions of people who were upset about gains that were made by others", Pauley finished Clinton's thought and blamed it on "millions of white people". It did not matter to them.

So effective that his win still seems to shock Clinton, 10 months after election night.

In recent weeks, Mr Trump has found himself at the centre of mounting controversy over what critics say has been his support for white supremacists and racists. It hurts a lot'.

"The forces that were at work in 2016 were unlike anything that I've ever seen or read about", she said. 'I'd been working on a victory speech'. She added that she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had purchased the home next door to their Chappaqua, New Yrok property as a location for White House staff and security.

"It was a transition very hard", she confesses. I really struggled, I couldn't feel, I couldn't think.
