A student at a high school in rural Washington state opened fire outside a biology classroom on Wednesday, killing another student and wounding three others before being caught. "When you go to a small school like this it's hard not to know [everyone]", the student continued.

"He attempted to fire one weapon, and it jammed", Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said at a news conference.

The suspect, who a classmate described as being obsessed with previous school shootings, was taken into custody. Initial information says that three people have been shot and there is possibly one fatality. Following the initial attack, all of the district's schools were immediately placed upon lockdown as authorities and first responders reported to the scene.

A large contingent of police and firefighters responded to a call to their emergency line, and anxious parents began arriving at the school.

The school is located in Rockford, a town of about 500 people located a few miles south of Spokane, WA.

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday evening that the custodian approached the suspect at Freeman High School during the incident that morning and ordered him to surrender.
