Trump to visit the disaster that Hurricane Irma left behind

President Trump will travel to Florida on Thursday to survey the damage from Hurricane Irma, the White House said.

In a tweet Thursday morning, Trump said he is leaving for Florida to meet first responders and Coast Guards, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and others, as they continue to deal with what the president described "a real disaster".

Hurricane Irma has slammed into southwest Florida, threatening to bring risky storm surges to coastal areas, already battered by the hurricane's powerful winds. Myers and Naples on the southwestern coast.

Trump will be joined by First lady Melania Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence.

Trump traveled twice to Texas in the wake of that storm and now looks set to visit Florida. We're with you today.

The White House had previously teased plans for Trump to visit Florida but said any trip would not be finalized until the situation there had stabilized to the point that a presidential visit would not add undue stress to local authorities.

Police in Hollywood, north of Miami, opened a criminal investigation on Wednesday after finding three dead patients at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hill, a facility that had been operating with little or no air conditioning.
