Donald Glover won the best comedy actor for "Atlanta", which he created and which carries his distinctive voice, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honoured for a sixth time for her role as a self-absorbed politician in the comedy "Veep", named best comedy for the third time.

Speaking backstage at the Emmy Awards Sunday following his win for best supporting actor in a comedy, Baldwin addressed the surprise appearance by the former White House press secretary as a part of a comedy bit that opened the show. She called her "Veep" role "the role of a lifetime and an adventure of utter joy".

Master of None's Lena Waithe also made history with her comedy writing win. She also joked about a potential storyline for the upcoming season. She has now broached the Emmys record previously set by Cloris Leachman, who has won eight acting Primetime Emmys and one Daytime Emmy.

Donald Glover's FX show is beloved by critics, and it won awards last night for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

The only other actor to ever come close to that sort of winning streak in the category has been Helen Hunt.

McKinnon bested two of her SNL co-stars, Leslie Jones and Vanessa Bayer, while Melissa McCarthy won for her guest work.

"This will be the largest audience to witness the Emmys, period, both in person and around the world", Spicer said.
